Racism unfortunately has always been a part of our society yet it shifts race during colonization. In the early years African Americans and Irish Americans were the targets. During World War 2 German Americans and the Japanese Americans were blamed. During the Cold War brought hatred and fear of any communist group, like the Russians, Chinese and Vietnamese.
Today I believe that Arabic Americans are the group that gets prejudiced against, because of the current wars we are in, the American people blame and fear Arabic Americans. In the short story “Where I Came From is Like This” Allen talks about how white people disliked the Indians, “On a few occasions we are noticed in any way other than as howling, bloodthirsty beings we are acclaimed for our noble quantities” (190), the reason for this is because at that time the whites and the Indians had a rivalry. Today you don’t see much hatred towards the Indians because the issue has in some way has been resolved.
Although I do not believe that racer is as major issue as it was in the sixties, I still believe that it is a problem in today’s society. You cannot fill out a job or school application without seeing a question about your race. People still question each other about ethnic background so yes, race is still an issue.
